In December 2022 I was contacted by a local creative agency and was tasked with designing set dressing and costume for a web commercial for Isuzu UK & International Motor's group.
I was briefed by the director to design around, and complement the secured location and talent. I wanted to have the talent be instantly recognisable as a carpenter and joiner, I designed his costume to be casual yet worn in, using a slightly oversized fit shirt with a comfortable fabric as I was aware the talent would be performing laborious actions on camera throughout the day. I chose red as the location was primarily beige to make him stand out on camera.
In addition to this, I had to dress the used workshop to appear appealing on camera as well as safe for talent and crew to move about the space. I used a combination of location-sourced and found props to busy the work surfaces to give them texture and make the space look 'lived-in', adhering to the brief.
I consulted with the DOP and director and discussed the problems of the location as many of the walls of the workshop were beige and bland I would have to add texture and colour to the walls to create interest on camera.
The solution I came up with was using cork boards with technical drawings, mood boards, and fictional lifestyle magazine covers to bring interest and texture to the backgrounds. The boards were also used to cover health and safety signs which tainted the colour palette of the scene, the boards were affixed using velcro tape so as not to damage the location.
